With his desire to express his artistic masterpieces with an unusual meaning, an artist is now at the center of one of the biggest controversies in the Philippine visual arts scene. His latest work “Poleteismo” is being vilified left and right by various religious groups and influential leaders and even a talk in the Senate. Senate panel says "No more subpoena for Mideo Cruz."
Mideo Cruz, in the other hand, says that we had the freedom of expressing ourselves especially if it refers to arts.He also said that he is not a kind of artist that creates beautiful flowers and nature but unusual paintings and drawings that makes the viewer thinks of what it means.On "Kulo" art exhibit, exhibited by his artwork entitled "Poleteismo" it showed Catholic religious symbols with pop culture and phallic objects (Jesus Christ with Mickey Mouse ears and a big crucifix with movable penis) has caused uproar among Filipino conservative Catholics calling his artwork evil,branded him as a demon.
Freedom of expression is now a big talk in the society after what had happened in the CCP art exhibit. We Filipinos knew already that we have the right to express ourselves as democratic country citizen.Besides we cannot question Cruz for what he had done because he is an artist. Artist have the freedom to express their emotions whenever they want because "art is a form of expressing one's feeling ".
Having our freedom means that we are free to say want we want. and what we feel. To an artist it is one of the requirement for them to create magnificent and interesting artwork. Cruz himself knows that he is good artist expressing his emotions and a good citizen to be criticize that way.
